Photography of
Arnie Warshawsky

Arnie loves to shoot fish. No, not with a spear gun or a three-prong. With a camera. A PADI Master Instructor, Arnie is also an Underwater Photography and Underwater Digital Photography Specialty Instructor. He loves teaching people how to dive and after they have learned he also loves teaching them how to take photographs underwater that don’t look like fuzzy blue with specks of fish in the distance. Arnie prefers using his old style Nikonos 35-mm film cameras because of the terrific resolution and color saturation you get using slide film and the absence of the frustrating digital lag. Digital lag is the time between you pressing the shutter button, the fish swimming away, and the camera going ‘click.’ On the other hand, film cameras don’t have the instant gratification of digital and are limited to 36 exposures, but there are other advantages to using film cameras, not the least of which is using the finest 35-mm underwater cameras and lenses ever manufactured. Arnie prefers to photograph with his Nikon Nikonos IV and Nikonos V cameras with his choice of four Nikonos underwater lenses: 35-mm, 28-mm, 20-mm, and 15-mm. And since Nikonos cameras are truly underwater cameras, there is no bulky camera housing to carry about. And whenever he feels the urge top play with digital imaging software, he can always scan in his photos (slides or negatives) using his film scanner. But he doesn’t ignore the digital world either. He own two Olympus and one Casio digital cameras that he routinely takes underwater (in housings). In fact, all of the photos shown with this article were taken with his housed Olympus C50 Zoom camera. Besides being an amazing photographer, he is also a very knowledgeable and experienced instructor.
